Our mares help us train our colts in the rugged terrain they grow up in. From day one they are exposed to cactus and rocks. They teach the colts how to navigate mountainous trails with ease and precision. When we start our colts as two-year-olds, we do a lot of groundwork to ensure a good foundation that is safe for the horse and rider. Most of the basics are already covered before anyone makes the first ride. We then put thirty days on them and turn them back out on the ranch. We get the colts back in when they are three and it does not take very many rides before they are ready to go to work on the ranch.
